Lights, Camera, Lagos: AMVCA 2026 Takes Center Stage Tonight

Zoyols News

Lagos is currently the center of attraction as the African film industry descends upon Eko Hotels and Suites for the 12th edition of the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards. After months of intense preparation and the careful curation of high-fashion looks, the stars have officially arrived for what is arguably the biggest night in African cinema.

This year’s ceremony introduces a fresh energy to the stage with comedian Bovi and South African actress Nomzamo Mbatha taking over as hosts. Their debut marks a significant turning point for the awards, as they step into the shoes of IK Osakioduwa, who held a remarkable 11-year streak as the face of the gala. The transition has been a major talking point among fans, with many eager to see how the new duo will maintain the high standard of wit and glamour established since the inaugural event in 2013.

Zoyols News is keeping a close eye on the frontrunners, particularly the two films leading the pack with nine nominations each. Daniel Etim-Effiong’s “The Herd,” a gripping 2025 crime thriller, has arrived at the awards with significant momentum. Despite early controversies regarding its honest portrayal of national insecurities, the film has earned widespread respect for its bravery and technical brilliance. It faces stiff competition from “Gingerrr,” a masterfully crafted comedy-crime fusion produced by the powerhouse quartet of Kiekie, Bisola Aiyeola, Bolaji Ogunmola, and Wunmi Toriola. Having already impressed international audiences in London and the United States, “Gingerrr” is a serious contender for the night’s top honors.

The competition extends into the heavy-hitting categories of Best Actor and Best Actress. The men’s category is particularly tight, featuring veterans like Kanayo O. Kanayo, Femi Branch, Mike Ezuruonye, Lateef Adedimeji, and last year’s winner, Wale Ojo. While the Best Actor race is anyone’s game, the Best Actress category feels slightly more defined, with Linda Ejiofor emerging as a favorite for her work in “The Serpent’s Gift.” However, with icons like Sola Sobowale and Bimbo Akintola also in the running, the results are far from guaranteed.

Beyond the trophies, the red carpet remains a spectacle of its own. Celebrities have spared no expense this year, commissioning bespoke outfits to outdo the viral moments of previous editions. Whether it’s the sculptural elegance seen in past years from stars like Nana Akua Addo or the avant-garde, futuristic statements like those favored by Pretty Mike, the fashion tonight is expected to be a bold celebration of African couture and creative identity.

In a related wave of excitement across Lagos, the social scene was recently set ablaze by the launch of the Heineken House Experience at Ilubirin. The event, titled “A Day With Thibaut,” kicked off with the dramatic unveiling of a hot air balloon by Thibaut Boidin of Nigerian Breweries Plc. It was a sophisticated blend of sports and entertainment, timed perfectly with the UEFA Champions League and Formula 1 fever.

The evening, hosted by the ever-charismatic Darey Art Alade, featured a rich lineup of talent ranging from an orchestral opening to a comedy set by AY. Music lovers were treated to a soulful performance by Johnny Drille, while the Loud Urban Choir and Awanjo dancers kept the energy levels high. Zoyols News observed that between the live Formula 1 screenings and the premium curated meals, the event successfully set a new benchmark for lifestyle activations in the city. As the night wound down with sets from DJ Deluxe, it was clear that Lagos is currently in its most vibrant season yet.
