Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has acknowledged Chief Olabode George, the Atona Oodua of Yorubaland, as a pivotal figure in his political journey. The governor praised George’s enduring influence in Nigerian politics and highlighted the crucial role he played in Makinde’s rise.
Speaking during the celebration of George’s 80th birthday in Lagos, Makinde recounted how the octogenarian supported him in 2014, ensuring he could use a military facility for his governorship declaration despite efforts by some federal interests to block the event.
“A lot of people know that Baba served in the military, and rising to the rank of General shapes a person who is not easily moved. In 2014, I was pursuing the ambition to become governor on the PDP platform and planned a public declaration at the Polo Ground in Ibadan. Certain individuals within the party tried to frustrate us, even pressuring the military to withdraw approval for the venue,” Makinde said.
He continued, “I turned to Baba George, and he intervened immediately. By the eve of the declaration, the approval was restored, and the event went ahead. That moment marked the beginning of this journey, and today I stand as Governor of Oyo State. I want to publicly thank Baba for being part of that journey.”
Makinde also reflected on George’s resilience and contribution to the nation, describing him as a figure who has faced trials yet remains steadfast. “From everything shared today, the lesson I take home is clear. Life has rough patches, but God’s promise is safe arrival at our destination. Baba’s life exemplifies that, and we celebrate him for it,” he said, extending heartfelt birthday wishes.
The celebration drew numerous dignitaries, including the Governor of Bauchi State, Senator Bala Mohammed, the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, other traditional rulers, captains of industry, and leading political figures, all gathered to honor Chief George’s remarkable life and legacy.
