A self-proclaimed traditional healer, popularly known as a marabout, has been taken into custody in Bamako after a failed spiritual promise to deliver an Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) victory for Mali. The man, identified as Mr. Sinayogo, reportedly collected approximately €33,500 over 22 million CFA francs from hopeful supporters after guaranteeing that the national team would emerge victorious in the tournament.
The situation turned sour on Friday when Mali’s national team was knocked out in the quarter-finals following a 1-0 defeat to Senegal. The loss immediately sparked outrage among those who had contributed to the massive sum. An angry mob descended on Sinayogo’s residence shortly after the final whistle, forcing local police to intervene and whisk him away for his own safety.
By Saturday, Sinayogo was officially arrested on charges of fraud. He is currently being held at the cybercrime division in the Malian capital. An official from the division noted that under Malian law, charlatanism is a punishable offense. The official further explained that while they had been monitoring the situation, moving against him while the team was still in the competition would have been nearly impossible due to the intense national passion surrounding the tournament.
Interestingly, Sinayogo’s rise to spiritual fame seems to have been a recent development. Sources close to the situation, including local social media content creators, revealed that he was previously known more for his political activism. He reportedly transitioned into his role as a spiritual healer almost overnight, quickly amassing a small fortune from believers before his claims were put to the ultimate test on the football pitch.
The case has sparked a wider conversation about the intersection of faith, sports, and financial exploitation. As Sinayogo remains in detention, authorities are using the incident to warn the public against falling victim to similar schemes that promise supernatural results for national events.
