African Democratic Congress chieftain Dele Momodu has accused President Bola Tinubu of lacking the trust of Nigerians to oversee a free and fair election in 2027. He said the concern extends even to some of the President’s own supporters.
Speaking on Arise News’ Prime Time, the veteran journalist claimed many people believe Tinubu would be unwilling to leave office if he lost the election. Momodu said Nigerians would resist any attempt to remain in power after a defeat.
“Look, nobody trusts Tinubu to run a free and fair election, including his own supporters,” he said, adding that some supporters expect the President to win because of his influence.
Momodu said his confidence was not based solely on the ADC, but also on what he described as public opposition to Tinubu seeking another term. He declined to discuss his party’s plans, saying its members were working behind the scenes to challenge the President’s re-election bid.
He also claimed that some APC governors, judges and lawmakers were anxious about the political climate and reluctant to confront the President. Momodu described Tinubu’s influence as so strong that few people were willing to tell him it was time to leave office.
The comments reflect the growing political tension ahead of the 2027 election. Tinubu and the APC have not responded to Momodu’s remarks.
