Nigeria Rejects Claims of Backing Niger Coup

Zoyols News

In a statement issued on Thursday, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Sola Enikanolaiye, described circulating claims on social media that Nigeria or ECOWAS backed the coup as false and irresponsible.

The minister said Nigeria remains a strong supporter of democracy, constitutional order, and regional stability, and has no interest in supporting any illegal or unconstitutional change of government.

He pointed to an earlier official statement from the ministry which called for a peaceful return to stability and constitutional order in Niger, noting that the two countries share deep historical, cultural, and fraternal ties.

Ambassador Enikanolaiye urged the public to disregard the misleading videos and narratives being spread online, stressing that Nigeria remains committed to ECOWAS protocols on democracy and good governance, as well as the African Union’s position against unconstitutional changes of government.
