Former President Olusegun Obasanjo paid a visit to former military ruler Gen. Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida at his hilltop residence in Minna, Niger State, on Monday, sparking fresh speculation about their possible involvement in political manoeuvres ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Obasanjo, who arrived via Ahmed Bola Tinubu International Airport, was received by Niger State protocol officials before proceeding directly to Babangida’s residence. Sources told Zoyols Blog that the closed-door meeting lasted around 30 minutes, after which Obasanjo returned to the airport.
While the exact agenda of the meeting remains undisclosed, insiders suggest it could be linked to national issues and the unfolding 2027 election landscape. Obasanjo has recently been associated with reports of orchestrating a joint ticket featuring Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso under the African Democratic Congress (ADC). The proposed duo is reportedly being positioned to first challenge former Vice President Atiku Abubakar for the party’s ticket and, if successful, contest President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid.
Observers note that an alternative plan may see Obi and Kwankwaso pursuing another platform if they fail to secure the ADC nomination. Babangida is said to have encouraged Kwankwaso to leave the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) for the ADC, which analysts view as part of a broader strategic realignment.
Neither Obasanjo nor Babangida has publicly commented on the visit, but political circles interpret Monday’s meeting as a significant move in the evolving chessboard of Nigeria’s 2027 elections.
