Well-known Nigerian comedian Okey Bakassi has placed a hefty ₦5 million bounty on the table for anyone who can provide information leading to the recovery of several high-end smartphones stolen during a football match in Ikoyi, Lagos. The theft, which took place on Wednesday evening, has left many in shock, especially considering the security and exclusivity typically associated with the area.
In a video shared with his followers, Bakassi detailed how a stranger managed to infiltrate their weekly private football session. He explained that out of pure goodwill, the group allowed the young man to join their game. However, that kindness was quickly betrayed. According to the comedian, the suspect played for a short while before faking an injury to excuse himself to the sidelines. While the rest of the players were focused on the match, the individual allegedly cleared out about eight phones from the stands and vanished.
Reports indicate that the stolen devices belong to several prominent businessmen who rely heavily on their phones for daily operations. Bakassi confirmed that the incident has already been formally reported to the police, and a full investigation is currently underway to track down the culprit and the missing hardware.
The comedian didn’t mince words when addressing the thief directly. He issued a stern 24-hour ultimatum, advising the suspect to return the devices to the security post where they were taken to avoid the full weight of the law. He noted that while it might take some time, the group is determined to find him. To speed up the process, Bakassi is calling on tech-savvy individuals and phone tracking experts to reach out to him, promising that the ₦5 million reward is ready for whoever successfully locates any of the devices.
As this story develops, Bakassi is also using his platform to warn the general public, particularly those frequenting the second-hand electronics market. He urged buyers to be extremely cautious and to verify the history of any phone before purchasing, noting that stolen gadgets are often sold off at suspiciously low prices. For now, the hunt is on, and all eyes are on the Ikoyi security footage as the 24-hour window draws to a close.
