The Association of Local Government of Nigeria, Osun State chapter, has cautioned Governor Ademola Adeleke against what it described as unlawful interference in the ongoing leadership crisis involving the National Union of Road Transport Workers across the state.
The warning comes as the disagreement within the transport union continues, following the governor’s decision to suspend NURTW activities in motor parks across Osun State shortly after local government chairmen announced caretaker committees to oversee transport union operations.
Reacting to the development, ALGON maintained that the governor’s action was inconsistent with the provisions of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as amended.
According to the association, the Constitution clearly assigns the establishment, management, maintenance and regulation of public motor parks to local government councils, making them the lawful authorities responsible for overseeing such facilities.
ALGON argued that the state governor has no constitutional power to suspend the activities of transport unions operating within public motor parks or assume responsibility for their administration.
The association further described the reported directive banning the activities of the National Union of Road Transport Workers as unconstitutional, null and void, insisting that the action has no legal foundation.
It also urged security agencies operating in the state to remain impartial and ensure that all actions taken in relation to the dispute are guided strictly by the provisions of the law and the Constitution.
According to the association, respecting constitutional boundaries and the rule of law remains essential to resolving the lingering crisis without creating further tension across the state’s transport sector.
