Tunji Disu has stepped in as acting Inspector-General of Police after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu accepted the resignation of Kayode Egbetokun on Tuesday. Egbetokun, who had led the Nigeria Police Force since June 2023, stepped down before the end of his four-year term, citing family matters that needed his attention. In a note shared by Bayo Onanuga, the President’s adviser on information, Tinubu thanked him for his service.   Disu’s elevation shifts the Force’s top hierarchy. He was until now Assistant Inspector-General overseeing the Criminal Investigation Department Annex in Alagbon, Lagos. In Nigeria it is common for senior officers to retire when a junior is named IG, not because the law demands it, but because the institution leans heavily on seniority and order. That means several Deputy Inspectors-General could be preparing to bow out.   Frank Mba is one of them. He started out as an inspector and climbed steadily—ASP in 1999, DSP in 2003, SP in 2008, CSP in 2012, ACP in 2014, DCP in 2018, CP by the end of 2020, and AIG in March 2023. Most people remember him as the Force’s spokesman, a role he held three times. He also served in Liberia under the UN, earning a medal for that tour.   Mohammed Gumel came into the DIG slot late last year, taking charge of the Force Intelligence Department in Abuja. Known for pushing community policing, he was once named best advocate for that approach in 2024. His background includes time as a commissioner and training at the Police Staff College, plus a fellowship with professional managers.   Ademola Hamzat oversees logistics and supply, a job that covers everything from housing to procurement. Decorated as DIG in March 2025, he had earlier run Zone 16 in Yenagoa, served as Oyo State commissioner, and led the counter-terrorism unit. He’s from Ifelodun in Kwara State.   Yahaya Abubakar holds the finance and administration portfolio. Since his promotion by the Police Service Commission in 2024, he has managed budgets, postings, and general administrative work at headquarters. Before that he was an AIG and a zone commander.   Basil Idegwu leads research and planning, the department that shapes policy and pushes for modernisation. With a doctorate in peace and security studies, he’s been in that role since March 2025, focusing on standards and operational efficiency.   Bzigu Kwazhi is in charge of operations, coordinating everything from riot control to joint missions with the military. His field record includes restoring calm in Plateau and Adamawa this year, and earlier postings as commissioner in Osun and Akwa Ibom.   Idris Abubakar joined the Force in 1992 as a cadet ASP from Garko in Kano. He studied education at Usman Danfodiyo University, then went on to earn a master’s and doctorate in psychology at Abuja.   Adebowale Williams runs the ICT department, handling the tech systems that keep the Force functioning in a digital age. As a DIG, his work ties directly into the push for smarter policing.   All of this was...
