Gunmen have killed Jatau Samkwar, the Mishkaham of Bokkos, at his residence in Daffo, Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The attack reportedly took place on Monday night. According to accounts of the incident, the assailants entered the ruler’s home and shot him in the legs. He was taken to a hospital in Daffo and later transferred to another medical facility, where he died.
The Mwaghavul Traditional Council’s Bokkos branch announced the killing and described the attackers as Fulani militias. Their identities have not been independently confirmed.
Kefas Mallai, chairman of the Community Peace Observers in Bokkos, confirmed the incident and voiced concern over repeated attacks in the area. He also said the ruler’s son had reportedly been abducted but was freed on Sunday, a day before his father was killed.
At the time of reporting, neither the Mwaghavul Chiefdom nor the Mwaghavul Development Association had issued a formal statement. Attempts to reach Plateau State Police spokesperson Alfred Alabo were unsuccessful.
The killing comes amid ongoing security concerns across Bokkos and other parts of Plateau State. In a separate incident, three people travelling by motorcycle between communities were reportedly attacked. Two were killed and the third was injured.
The latest violence has renewed concerns about the safety of residents and traditional leaders in communities facing repeated attacks and abductions.
