The First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has distributed 10,000 modern sanitary pads to secondary school girls in Zamfara State through the Renewed Hope Initiative. The distribution took place at Government Girls Day Secondary School, Gusau, with each girl receiving a year-long supply of pads.
Representing the First Lady, the wife of Zamfara State Governor, Hajiya Huriyya Dauda Lawal, explained that the initiative aims to reach over 370,000 schoolgirls in rural communities nationwide by the end of the programme. She highlighted the importance of ensuring that these essential supplies reach the most vulnerable girls who may not have access to proper menstrual hygiene products.
Senator Tinubu described the Renewed Hope Initiative’s “Flow with Confidence” programme as a vital intervention for menstrual health. She emphasized that the initiative seeks to empower girls, boost their confidence, and promote dignity by providing hygienic and safe menstrual products. “No girl should ever have to choose between her dignity and her education,” she said.
The First Lady also noted that each state, including the Federal Capital Territory, will receive 10,000 packs of sanitary pads to support girls in rural areas who cannot afford them. She stressed that disposable sanitary pads are not only convenient but also offer important health benefits for a girl’s reproductive well-being.
Hajiya Lawal urged the 14 local government chairpersons in Zamfara to take active responsibility in ensuring the supplies reach the intended beneficiaries. She called on them to scale up efforts and oversee the distribution directly to deserving girls in rural communities.
The Renewed Hope Initiative spent a total of two billion naira to procure the customised sanitary pads, which are being provided entirely free of charge to the girls. The programme reflects the administration’s commitment to supporting the education, health, and dignity of young girls across the country.
