Retail Supermarkets Nigeria Limited, operators of Shoprite in Nigeria, has dismissed claims that the Lekki outlet at The Palms Shopping Mall was sealed by the Lagos State Internal Revenue Service. The store remains fully operational, and no closure has taken place.
The reports circulating online, the company said, omit essential context, misrepresent tax procedures, and lack verified evidence. Shoprite has been operating in Nigeria for over two decades with full transparency, adhering strictly to statutory disclosure and tax regulations.
Chief Strategy Officer Bunmi Adeleye stated, “We comply with federal and state tax laws and maintain rigorous tax governance across all operations. Our obligations are met through structured internal controls and continuous engagement with the relevant authorities.”
While the sealing claim is unfounded, the company confirmed that it received a Demand Notice from LIRS concerning the reconciliation of PAYE deductions from April to July 2025. This notice is a standard procedural step in tax administration for large employers and does not indicate default or enforcement action. Shoprite is actively engaging with the LIRS technical team to finalize the reconciliation and settle any confirmed balance.
Adeleye added, “Our commitment is unwavering. We are addressing this procedural matter promptly to uphold our longstanding record of compliance and continue supporting the stability of the Lagos economy.”
Shoprite urged the public, media, and business partners to rely only on official communications from the company regarding its operational status.
