The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, has called on the latest set of graduates to remain committed to their national assignment rather than seeking ways to abandon the program. Speaking to the 2026 Batch ‘A’ Stream One corps members during his visit to the orientation camps in Ogun and Oyo states, the DG emphasized that the one-year service is a vital period for young Nigerians to contribute meaningfully to the country’s socio-economic growth.
General Nafiu commended the young men and women for answering the clarion call, but he was quick to offer some practical life advice. He urged the participants to take financial discipline seriously, noting that prudent management of their allowances would serve as a crucial foundation for their lives both during and after the service year. This counsel comes at a time when many young people are navigating a complex economic landscape.
According to details made available to Reports through the scheme’s spokesperson, Caroline Embu, the Director-General also stressed the importance of cultural sensitivity. He reminded the corps members that they are ambassadors of the scheme and should show deep respect for the traditions and customs of their host communities. He noted that being resourceful, punctual, and adaptable in their places of primary assignment would not only earn them respect but also open doors for future career opportunities.
Providing an update on the situation in Ogun State, the Coordinator, Mrs. Olayinka Nasamu, told the DG that the camp successfully registered 3,341 members, including 975 individuals who were originally slated for Lagos. She expressed satisfaction with how well the group had adjusted to the structured and regimented nature of camp life, describing their conduct as highly responsible.
A similar sentiment was echoed in Oyo State, where the Coordinator, Mr. Kayode Ola-Peters, reported that the 3,068 registered members have shown an impressive level of enthusiasm. He noted that the corps members have been active participants in all camp programs and seem genuinely eager to apply their skills toward national development across various sectors of the economy.
