The Oscars will soon be turning a new page. After marking a full century of celebrating film, the iconic awards ceremony is preparing to leave its longtime home in Hollywood. Organizers confirmed on Thursday that a fresh chapter will begin in central Los Angeles, signaling a major shift for one of the world’s most recognized events.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has decided that the ceremony will no longer take place at the Dolby Theatre after 2028. For decades, the venue has been closely tied to the glamour and prestige of the Oscars, sitting right along the famous Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Starting in 2029, the ceremony will move to the Peacock Theater, located within the LA LIVE complex. The venue sits beside the Crypto.com Arena, widely known as the home of the Los Angeles Lakers, and is expected to offer a new kind of experience for both guests in attendance and viewers around the world.
Academy CEO Bill Kramer and President Lynette Howell Taylor shared their excitement about the transition, noting that the new partnership with AEG will help create a fitting stage for the Oscars moving forward. They emphasized their commitment to delivering a global celebration of cinema that connects audiences both inside the theater and beyond.
The agreement, which spans a decade, comes at a time when the Oscars are also shifting away from traditional network television in the United States. Going forward, the ceremony will be streamed globally through YouTube, marking another significant evolution in how audiences engage with the event.
This move brings an end to a long-standing era at the Dolby Theatre, a location deeply rooted in Oscars history. Just steps away from the Roosevelt Hotel, where the very first Academy Awards took place in 1929, the venue has long symbolized the tradition and legacy of the ceremony.
Even so, Hollywood hasn’t always been the Oscars’ only stage. Over the years, the event has traveled across different parts of Los Angeles, including venues in Downtown and even Santa Monica during the 1960s. The upcoming move, therefore, feels less like a departure and more like a return to that spirit of evolution.
At this year’s ceremony, held on March 15, Paul Thomas Anderson’s “One Battle After Another” took home the award for best picture, standing out among a lineup of bold and diverse films. As the Oscars prepare for their next era, the focus remains the same—honoring storytelling that resonates across cultures and generations.
