Trump Floats Renaming New Mexico ‘New America’

Zoyols News

Trump’s idea to rename New Mexico as “New America” has drawn swift pushback from the state’s governor.

The president floated the change on social media, calling the current name less prestigious and suggesting the new one would be more fitting for the state. The White House even shared an image crossing out “Mexico” and replacing it with “America.”

New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham quickly rejected the suggestion, stating the name is not open for debate as it has existed long before the United States was formed. She added that the president appears to be trying to distract from other pressing issues.

The comment comes shortly after similar name-change proposals, including the renaming of the Gulf of Mexico and an earlier suggestion about Lake Ontario, both of which have faced international pushback.
