The political landscape of Ughelli South is witnessing a significant shift as the 2027 general elections approach. In a decisive move that highlights a growing desire for change, prominent chieftains of the All Progressives Congress (APC), operating under the Ughelli South United Forum and Ughievwen Leaders, have officially thrown their weight behind Chief Emuobo Gbagi for the Delta State House of Assembly seat.
This landmark endorsement took place during a well-attended stakeholders’ meeting in Otu-Jeremi on Sunday. The gathering, which drew a diverse crowd of community leaders, youth advocates, and women groups, saw a unanimous agreement to adopt Gbagi as the primary challenger to the incumbent lawmaker in the upcoming polls.
The formal motion for the endorsement was moved by Olorogun Matthew Ofioguma, who explained that the choice was the result of deep and widespread consultations across the constituency. Ofioguma pointed out that after evaluating the various individuals interested in the seat, it became evident that Chief Gbagi possesses the unique blend of character, experience, and the necessary qualifications to effectively advocate for the interests of Ughelli South at the state level. Olorogun Godwin Sito seconded the motion, which was met with overwhelming approval from everyone present.
During the session, the President-General of the Ughelli South United Forum, Chief Godwin Okporoko, clarified the group’s broader political stance. While reaffirming their support for the administrations of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, Okporoko emphasized that local representation requires a unified front. He noted that the people are determined to avoid fragmented efforts, leading to the decision to back a single, formidable candidate.
According to Zoyols Blog, the spirit of unity was further demonstrated by the withdrawal of Olorogun Gordons Okomitie, who had previously been in the race but chose to step down in favor of Chief Gbagi. Okporoko maintained that the community is not interested in forced consensus arrangements but rather in a candidate who truly represents the will of the people.
Adding academic and elder statesmanship to the discourse, Professor Godwin Darah raised concerns regarding the quality of current representation in the constituency. He stressed that the core duties of a legislator—effective lawmaking and ensuring the welfare of constituents—have been neglected. Professor Darah revealed that he had already authored an open letter to the Governor, voicing the community’s rejection of any attempts to impose an unpopular candidate on the people.
The Professor warned that ignoring the electorate’s preference could lead to a significant defeat for the party in the next election. He criticized the lack of visible projects or progress over the last few years, asserting that a constituency blessed with such vast natural resources and human talent deserves far better than what it is currently receiving.
The sentiment was echoed by a long list of local influential figures, including Olorogun Vincent Oduaran, Chief Michael Oshetigho, Chief Macaulay Dase, and several others. These leaders joined their voices to affirm that Chief Emuobo Gbagi stands as the collective choice to bring fresh energy and accountability to the Ughelli South Constituency in 2027.
