UK Names New Trade Commissioner for Africa

The United Kingdom has appointed Alastair Long as its new Trade Commissioner for Africa.

Long, who previously served in the role between 2019 and 2022, officially took up the position after his recent posting as ambassador to Bahrain. He will work with governments, businesses, and investors to strengthen commercial ties between the UK and the continent.

His focus includes expanding partnerships, promoting investment, and supporting sustainable economic growth across Africa. Speaking about the role, Long expressed excitement about returning to the region, describing Africa as the future and highlighting its energy and ambition.

He succeeds John Humphrey, who held the position since 2022. Humphrey noted that Long inherits strong momentum in UK-Africa trade relations and praised his expertise. The Trade Commissioner role leads the UK’s overseas efforts to promote exports, attract investment, and advance trade policy objectives across the continent.
