President Donald Trump escalated pressure on Iran on Wednesday, warning that time is running out for Tehran to negotiate and avoid potential US military action. In response, Iran vowed to defend itself “like never before” if provoked.
Trump’s top diplomat, Marco Rubio, said the Iranian leadership is at its weakest point in decades, while Germany’s Chancellor Friedrich Merz suggested the regime’s days could be numbered following the deadly crackdown on anti-government protests in late December and early January, which rights groups say claimed over 6,200 lives.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump called for Iran to negotiate a nuclear deal “good for all parties” and reiterated that any further attacks could be “far worse,” referencing US strikes on Iranian targets during last June’s conflict.
To reinforce the threat, a US naval strike group led by the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln is currently deployed in Middle Eastern waters, described by Trump as an “armada.”
Iran’s mission to the United Nations countered Trump’s warnings on X, asserting that the country is open to dialogue based on mutual respect but will defend itself if pushed. Iranian armed forces chief of staff, Habibollah Sayyari, also cautioned that any miscalculation by the US would cause serious repercussions.
Regional diplomacy is underway to prevent escalation. Following a recent call between Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Iran reached out to other US allies in the Middle East. Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council Ali Larijani spoke with Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, who stressed the importance of de-escalation and peaceful solutions. Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty also held talks with both Iranian and US officials, emphasizing the need to reduce tensions. Turkey’s Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan urged Washington to resume negotiations on the nuclear issue, warning against renewed conflict.
Analysts note that US options range from targeted strikes on military facilities to potential attacks aimed at Iran’s leadership under Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Iranian officials, however, maintain that diplomacy cannot be replaced by military threats and have had no recent contact with the US Middle East envoy.
As tensions rise, the world watches a delicate standoff where diplomacy, regional pressures, and military posturing collide, with the fate of the Middle East hanging in the balance.
