Tensions across the Middle East have escalated sharply after coordinated air and missile operations by the United States and Israel reportedly wiped out several top Iranian military and security leaders. Reports indicate that senior commanders within Iran’s military and intelligence hierarchy were killed during the strikes. Among those confirmed dead were top adviser to Iran’s supreme leadership, Ali Shamkhani, alongside IRGC commander Mohammed Pakpour, defence ministry official Amir Nasirzadeh, and intelligence operations head Saleh Asadi. Other casualties reportedly included nuclear research and defence innovation officials linked to Iran’s strategic programmes. The strikes also allegedly claimed the life of former Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who was said to be under house detention at the time of the attack, according to international media reports.
Iran responded swiftly with retaliatory missile and drone strikes across parts of the Gulf region. Emergency services in Beit Shemesh confirmed at least nine deaths and several injuries following a missile strike that destroyed a residential building, including a synagogue where civilians were reportedly sheltering. Rescue teams were seen searching through rubble, with destroyed vehicles, collapsed structures, and widespread panic reported at the scene.
Regional spillover effects were also recorded in neighbouring countries. Casualties were reported in Abu Dhabi and parts of Kuwait, while several commercial flights across the Middle East were cancelled or delayed. Authorities estimated that over 19,000 flights had been affected since hostilities intensified, leaving thousands of travellers stranded as airlines adjusted routes for safety.
The United States military confirmed the death of three of its service members during what it described as Operation Epic Fury. The Pentagon also stated that at least 11 other personnel were wounded. Officials maintained that American forces remained committed to protecting strategic interests in the region. They also rejected claims from Iran’s Revolutionary Guards that they had successfully struck the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln, insisting that the vessel remained fully operational and continued launching aircraft missions.
Following the death of Iran’s supreme leader, the country announced a 40-day mourning period and several public holidays. Iranian authorities also moved quickly to establish a temporary leadership structure. Senior cleric Alireza Arafi was appointed to a three-member transitional leadership council alongside judiciary chief Gholam-Hossein Mohseni-Ejei and President Masoud Pezeshkian. The council is expected to oversee governance until a new supreme leader is selected.
Global reactions have been divided. Major allies including China, Russia, and North Korea condemned the assassination, describing it as a dangerous escalation and a breach of international norms. Meanwhile, United States officials stated that military operations would continue as long as threats against American interests persist, signalling that diplomatic negotiations could still remain uncertain depending on how events unfold.
The growing hostilities have triggered global concern over oil supply routes, especially after Iran reportedly attempted to restrict movement through strategic maritime corridors. Analysts warn that if the conflict continues, economic and humanitarian consequences could extend far beyond the Middle East.
