Thirteen suspects are currently in police custody following a violent confrontation in Port Harcourt that left a local journalist injured and exposed a notorious criminal hideout. The arrests were made by the Rivers State Police Command in the Garrison area, a section of the Port Harcourt City Local Government Area that has recently been plagued by reports of robbery and public harassment.
The incident began when Mr. Allwell Ene, a correspondent for Classic FM, ventured into the neighborhood to conduct a solo investigation into the rising wave of crime in the vicinity. Ene was filming the activities of suspected hoodlums when the group turned on him. The journalist was physically assaulted and beaten for documenting their operations in what law enforcement describes as a “black spot” known for recurring illegal activity.
Responding to the distress call, the Divisional Police Officer for Olu-Obasanjo dispatched a team to the scene to rescue the journalist from his attackers. Following the assault, the Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, ordered an immediate and thorough crackdown on the area to root out the elements responsible for the violence and the general insecurity in the axis.
Confirming the development, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Blessing Agabe, stated that the ongoing coordinated operations have so far led to the apprehension of thirteen individuals. These suspects are believed to be part of a larger syndicate involved in phone snatching, the dispossession of valuables, and the intimidation of residents and commuters passing through the Olu-Obasanjo stretch.
