Donald Duke, presidential candidate of the Peoples Redemption Party, has explained that he is seeking the nation’s highest office in 2027 so he can confront the country’s deepening problems. Speaking to journalists in Abuja on Tuesday, the former Cross River State governor said Nigeria has struggled with a leadership gap since the return to democratic rule in 1979, and he pledged to close that gap if elected next year.
He argued that those who have governed since 1979 arrived with political visions, yet none brought a leadership vision capable of delivering political fulfilment and real economic change. According to him, the political system has been marked by frustration since democracy was restored. Nigeria, he said, could have achieved far more if the right leadership had been in place.
Successive governments have come and gone, he noted, without one that carried a clear leadership vision. That, he explained, is why he has stepped forward: to shift the political question and deliver the development and growth the country still needs. Those in politics, he added, should not trade insults. They should tell Nigerians what they can actually do for the country.
Duke also said earlier leaders took office without a firm idea of what they meant to accomplish. Without an articulated vision, he maintained, government has continued to fail the people.
