A tragic military aviation accident in India’s remote northeastern region has claimed the lives of five Indian Air Force personnel. The crash occurred on Saturday as a Russian-made Antonov An-32 transport aircraft was attempting to land at a base in Jorhat, a city located in Assam state.
In an official statement addressing the incident, the air force expressed deep regret over the loss of its personnel and extended heartfelt condolences to the grieving families, promising to stand firmly by them during this difficult period. While the military’s official release did not specify the total number of people on board or explicitly detail survivors, an air force official speaking on the condition of anonymity revealed that the co-pilot managed to survive the impact.
Visuals from the crash site, obtained, captured a grim scene. The footage showed the twin-engine turboprop aircraft apparently broken into pieces, with a thick plume of black smoke billowing into the sky.
According to military authorities, the aircraft was executing a routine sortie just before the fatal approach. To determine exactly what went wrong during the landing sequence, the air force has announced that a formal court of inquiry is being established to investigate the root cause of the accident.
The Antonov An-32 is a staple of India’s tactical transport fleet, specifically engineered to maintain high performance in extreme climates and challenging high-altitude terrains. The Indian Air Force relies on a fleet of roughly one hundred of these rugged transport planes to ferry military supplies and deliver crucial civilian aid to the country’s most isolated mountainous regions.
Despite their design for harsh environments, this fleet has seen tragedy before. This weekend’s crash echoes a similar disaster in 2019, when an An-32 went down in the neighboring state of Arunachal Pradesh near the Chinese border, resulting in the deaths of 13 people on board.
