A Message to Kwankwaso: Is It Time to Trade Politics for Legacy

Zoyols Blog

In an open letter reflecting the current political climate in Kano, an appeal has been made to the former governor, Dr. Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso, to consider a shift in his legendary career. The message begins with a note of sympathy regarding the ongoing friction between the national leader of the NNPP and his political godson, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf. Having experienced the highs and lows of the Nigerian political landscape, the letter suggests that perhaps the time has come for Kwankwaso to pivot from active partisan battles to a more statesman-like role.

The core of the message, as seen on Reports, encourages Kwankwaso to fully embody the title he often uses, “Aminun Kano.” With the passing of icons like Maitama Sule and Mallam Aminu Kano, a leadership vacuum exists that Kwankwaso is uniquely positioned to fill. Instead of focusing on the sting of perceived betrayals, the author suggests he should take pride in the fact that his mentorship has already produced two governors for the state—a feat that cements his legacy regardless of current disagreements.

The letter urges the former governor to re-energize his foundation and double down on his reputation as “Mr. Education.” Rather than worrying about who might turn against him next in the political arena, Kwankwaso is encouraged to focus on the dilapidated state of grassroots education in Kano. By sponsoring students from secondary school through to master’s degrees and partnering with international organizations, he could provide a developmental roadmap that transcends election cycles.

There is a growing sentiment that Kwankwaso should become a father figure to whom all sides come for mentorship and guidance. His influence among the wealthy, the political elite, and the ordinary citizens of Northern Nigeria is seen as a powerful tool that could be used to unite the region and foster genuine progress. The appeal makes it clear: while he still possesses the clout to influence who wins elections, that shouldn’t necessarily be his primary goal anymore.

The big question hanging over the state remains whether the defection of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf marks the end of an era or a new beginning for the Kwankwasiyya leader. By prioritizing development over the daily grind of political maneuvering, Kwankwaso has the chance to redesign his path and ensure his name remains synonymous with the growth of Kano for generations to come.
