AFCON 2025: Diaz and Sinayoko Trade Goals in Morocco-Mali Draw

Zoyols Blog

A tense and tactical battle at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat saw tournament hosts Morocco held to a 1-1 draw by a resilient Malian side. While the Atlas Lions were hoping to build on their opening victory, they found themselves frustrated by a disciplined Mali team that refused to buckle under the pressure of the home crowd.

From the opening whistle, Morocco dominated the ball, forcing the West Africans to retreat into their own half. Brahim Diaz, who has quickly become the focal point of the Moroccan attack, nearly opened the scoring in the 16th minute, but his shot was denied by an alert Djigui Diarra in goal. Ayoub El Kaabi also came inches away from finding the net with a header that just missed the target as the pressure mounted.

The deadlock was finally broken deep into first-half stoppage time. Following a VAR review that spotted a handball in the box, Morocco was awarded a penalty. Diaz stepped up with total composure, sending Diarra the wrong way to give the hosts a lead right before the break. The goal seemed to set the stage for a Moroccan victory, but the second half had a different script in store.

Mali returned for the second period with renewed energy and found their way back into the game just after the hour mark. The roles were reversed when VAR intervened once again, this time penalizing Jawad El Yamiq for a challenge on Lassine Sinayoko. Sinayoko took the responsibility himself, beating Yassine Bounou from the spot to net his second goal of the competition and silence the Rabat crowd.

In the closing stages, Morocco threw everything forward. Youssef En Nesyri was denied by a brilliant leg save from Diarra, and Mali survived a terrifying moment in stoppage time when a misplaced defensive header almost ended in an own goal. Despite the late flurry, the points were shared at the final whistle.

This result leaves Morocco at the top of Group A with four points, while Mali sits tied with Zambia on two points. As noted by Reports, while Morocco is still in a strong position to advance to the knockout stages, the dropped points mean they cannot afford any complacency heading into their final group match.
