While Nigeria’s 2–0 victory over Algeria in Marrakesh was a statement of footballing dominance, it is a single moment of celebration that has captured the imagination of fans across the continent. When Super Eagles striker Akor Adams doubled the lead in the 57th minute, he didn’t go for a typical knee slide or backflip. Instead, he stood perfectly still with one arm raised in a solemn, powerful pose.
The gesture was a deliberate tribute to Patrice Lumumba, the legendary independence hero and first Prime Minister of the DR Congo. Specifically, Adams was mirroring Michel Nkuka Mboladinga, a famous Congolese superfan who has become a viral sensation during this tournament. Mboladinga, known simply as “Lumumba,” is often seen standing motionless in the stands for entire matches, mimicking the iconic statue of the fallen leader.
The choice of celebration carries significant weight given the recent friction in the tournament. Earlier, during the Round of 16, Algerian forward Mohamed Amoura was seen imitating the same pose after his side defeated DR Congo. That act sparked a wave of criticism from those who felt it was a mockery of a revolutionary icon. Though Amoura later apologized, claiming he was unaware of the historical context, Adams’ decision to recreate the pose appears to be a gesture of respect and solidarity with the Congolese people.
On the pitch, the Super Eagles were clinical and disciplined, proving why they are currently the only team in the competition with a perfect winning record. Victor Osimhen once again lived up to his reputation, earning the Man of the Match title after breaking the deadlock in the 47th minute and later setting up Adams for the second goal with a selfless assist.
This win sets the stage for what many consider the “final before the final.” Nigeria is now headed to the semi-finals to face the host nation, Morocco. The high-stakes clash is scheduled for Wednesday, January 14, at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat. With the team firing on all cylinders and the “Lumumba” tribute sparking conversations about African unity, the momentum is firmly with the Super Eagles.
