Bakassi: Young Boy Injured by Stray Bullet During NDLEA Raid

Zoyols News

What began as a targeted drug raid in the Ikang community of Bakassi Local Government Area took a violent turn on Wednesday, leaving an innocent young boy fighting for his life after being hit by a stray bullet. Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency had moved into the area to apprehend two suspected drug dealers, but the mission quickly spiraled into a chaotic confrontation with a local mob.

As the situation intensified, the sound of gunfire echoed through the neighborhood, causing residents to scramble for safety. The atmosphere shifted from a standard law enforcement operation to a scene of panic within minutes. One witness described how the community was blindsided by the sudden violence, noting that it was only after the dust settled that they found the young victim lying on the ground.

The boy was immediately rushed to the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, where he is currently being treated for his injuries. Sebastian Lebo, the spokesperson for the Cross River State Command of the NDLEA, confirmed the incident and explained that the officers were forced to defend themselves after coming under a coordinated mob attack. While he regretted the injury to the youngster, he noted that the boy is currently responding positively to medical care.

Despite the fierce resistance from the mob, the agency successfully took the two primary targets into custody. Lebo confirmed that a significant quantity of illicit substances was recovered during the raid. While the suspects remain in detention, the incident has left the Ikang community in a state of unease, with many questioning how a routine arrest could escalate into a shootout that put innocent bystanders at risk.
