Crisis in Oyo Assembly as Impeachment Rumors Divide Lawmakers

Zoyols News

The political atmosphere in Oyo State has taken a tense turn as rumors of an impeachment plot within the State House of Assembly transition from quiet whispers to a full-scale crisis. What started as speculation is now a central concern for the state’s political class, with the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) reportedly keeping a close watch on the situation to see how the internal friction might reshape the state’s power dynamics.

At the heart of this unfolding drama is a high-stakes meeting recently held at the private residence of Governor Seyi Makinde. The gathering was reportedly called to address growing concerns that a rift was being deliberately created between the executive and legislative arms of the government. Following the meeting, the cracks within the Assembly have become more visible as lawmakers begin to take sides publicly.

While the Deputy Speaker and several other members have come forward to flatly deny any involvement in a plot to remove leadership, a notable group of lawmakers has remained silent. This lack of communication from certain quarters has only served to fuel the uncertainty, leading many to believe that the divisions within the house run deeper than the public denials suggest.

Hon. Gbenga Oyekola, the Assembly’s Chief Whip, has been one of the most vocal voices attempting to clear the air. In a detailed update shared via his social media, Oyekola maintained that he was never part of any clandestine move to destabilize the state’s peace. He further revealed that during the Governor’s meeting, it was alleged that the Speaker, Adebo Ogundoyin, had been approached by powerful political and traditional figures with financial inducements to influence his future ambitions—offers the Speaker reportedly turned down.

Despite Oyekola’s pledge of loyalty to Governor Makinde and the Speaker, questions continue to swirl around the stability of the house. The silence of the undecided lawmakers is being viewed by analysts as a significant indicator of underlying tension. Many are now looking back at earlier warnings from former Governor Ayodele Fayose regarding political instability, wondering if his predictions are finally starting to manifest.

As the situation develops, more lawmakers are expected to declare their stances in the coming days. For now, the political stakes in Oyo remain incredibly high. Whether the House can find a path back to unity or if this friction will lead to a major leadership shakeup remains to be seen, but the outcome will undoubtedly dictate the state’s political direction for the foreseeable future.
