The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission has officially confirmed that it has received a formal petition filed by the Chairman of the Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote. The petition, which was delivered on Tuesday in Abuja, targets the Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, Farouk Ahmed. In a statement released by the commission’s spokesperson, John Odey, the agency verified that the document was submitted through Dangote’s legal counsel and assured the public that a thorough investigation into the allegations would follow.
The legal move, spearheaded by Chief Ogwu Onoja, SAN, on behalf of the business mogul, calls for a high-level intervention. According to details obtained by Reports, the petition specifically requests the arrest, investigation, and subsequent prosecution of the NMDPRA boss. The core of the complaint centers on allegations of corruption and financial impropriety said to have occurred during the performance of his official duties at the regulatory body.
Among the most striking claims in the petition is the allegation that Farouk Ahmed spent upwards of seven million dollars on the education of four of his children in Switzerland. The document, which was formally submitted to the office of the ICPC Chairman, Musa Aliyu, SAN, suggests that these school fees were paid upfront for a six-month period. The petitioner argues that there is no identifiable lawful source of income that could justify such a massive expenditure by a public official.
The petition further contends that the NMDPRA Chief has grossly abused his office, violating established codes of conduct for public officers. By allegedly engaging in the unlawful spending of public funds totaling millions of dollars, the petition paints a picture of monumental corruption that requires immediate judicial attention. As the anti-graft agency begins its review, the outcome of this investigation is expected to have significant implications for the petroleum regulatory sector.
