Dangote Names Dr Hassan Mahmud as Group Chief Economist

Dangote Group has announced the appointment of Dr Hassan Mahmud, a seasoned economist and former Director at the Central Bank of Nigeria, as its new Group Chief Economist, bolstering the company’s economic advisory expertise amid increasing global and domestic market uncertainties.

In his role, Dr Mahmud will act as the Group’s principal adviser on economic strategy, market dynamics, and policy implications, reporting directly to Aliko Dangote, President of the Dangote Group.

With over 30 years of experience in economic policy, financial sector regulation, and central banking, Dr Mahmud brings a wealth of knowledge to the position. During his tenure at the Central Bank, he held senior roles including Director of the Trade and Exchange Department, Director of the Monetary Policy Department, Secretary to the Monetary Policy Committee, and Special Assistant on Economic Policy and Research to the CBN Governor. He also currently serves on the Board of Economists for Daily Trust.

Dr Mahmud’s influence extends beyond Nigeria, having played a key role in regional economic initiatives, including consulting for the African Union Commission on trade integration and the establishment of the African Monetary Fund.

Academically, he holds a PhD in Economics and an MSc in Energy Economics and Policy from the University of Surrey in the United Kingdom, alongside a BSc in Economics from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. He is also an alumnus of the Harvard Kennedy School and holds professional certifications as a Bank Examiner and AML/CFT Analyst.

A recognized authority in his field, Dr Mahmud is a Fellow of the Nigerian Statistical Association, the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria, and the Compliance Institute of Nigeria. He is a prolific researcher with numerous publications in macroeconomics, monetary policy, energy economics, and financial engineering.

Beyond his corporate responsibilities, Dr Mahmud serves as a visiting professor at several Nigerian universities and currently presides over the Nigerian Association for Energy Economics, further cementing his role as a leading voice in shaping Nigeria’s economic and energy landscape.
