The European Parliament has reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with Nigeria to address security challenges, manage migration, and advance sustainable development, calling Nigeria a vital partner in Africa’s stability and progress.
During a two-day working visit to Abuja, Chairman of the Parliament’s Committee on Foreign Affairs, David MacAllister, said the European Union remains fully invested in strengthening its ties with Nigeria through joint peace and security efforts.
MacAllister explained that the EU’s ongoing support includes a range of initiatives — from disarmament and deradicalisation programmes to reintegration and peacebuilding efforts — all aimed at restoring stability and rebuilding communities affected by violence.
He noted that the roots of terrorism in Nigeria go beyond ideology, pointing to factors such as poverty, unemployment, communal clashes, poor governance, and environmental degradation as major contributors. “We expect that all groups and vulnerable communities will be adequately protected by the Nigerian authorities,” he said.
Leading a six-member delegation from five EU member countries, MacAllister said their meetings with Nigerian officials focused on peacebuilding, economic cooperation, and migration management — key areas he described as essential for regional stability.
“Our goal is a prosperous, democratic, and stable West Africa — and that begins with a strong and resilient Nigeria,” he said. “The European Union needs Nigeria as a partner to uphold shared values, manage migration, and promote peace and development. Nigeria truly matters to us.”
MacAllister added that the visit reflected the EU’s renewed commitment to deeper collaboration under what he called the “Team Europe approach.” He emphasized that both sides share mutual interests rooted in multilateralism, human rights, and sustainable global growth.
“This visit underscores the European Parliament’s determination to build stronger, results-driven relations with Nigeria,” he told Zoyols Blog. “We need each other — as reliable, forward-looking partners working for a more peaceful and equitable world.”
