Ronaldo Nets Brace as Portugal Thrash Uzbekistan

Zoyols News

Cristiano Ronaldo delivered a stunning response to his critics with a brilliant two goal performance as Portugal cruised to a commanding 5 to 0 victory over Uzbekistan in their Group K clash at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Portuguese captain, who had faced criticism following his team’s disappointing 1 to 1 draw against DR Congo in their opening match, silenced doubters in spectacular fashion by becoming the first footballer to score in six different editions of the FIFA World Cup.

Ronaldo wasted little time making his mark, opening the scoring just six minutes into the game with a superb half volley after connecting with an excellent cross from Joao Cancelo.

He doubled Portugal’s advantage before the interval, calmly finishing off a perfectly timed through pass from Bruno Fernandes to put his side firmly in control before half time.

The 41 year old came close to completing a hat trick, but a goal line clearance by Abdukodir Khusanov denied him a third goal. Despite Portugal’s dominance after the break, the veteran striker was unable to add to his tally.

Speaking after the match, Ronaldo explained the meaning behind his passionate “I’m back” celebration, saying it was simply a reminder to those who had questioned his ability after more than two decades at the highest level.

He said he was delighted with the victory but stressed that the team’s performance mattered more than his personal achievements.

According to Ronaldo, individual records are always special, but his primary objective has always been to help Portugal achieve success. He admitted the squad had endured a difficult week but praised his teammates for staying united and improving their performance when it mattered most.

Portugal will now face Colombia in their final Group K fixture on Sunday, June 28, with both teams battling for top spot and qualification to the knockout stage.

Results from Tuesday’s matches saw Norway defeat Senegal 3 to 2, Algeria come from behind to beat Jordan 2 to 1, Portugal overwhelm Uzbekistan 5 to 0, England and Ghana settle for a goalless draw, while Croatia edged Panama 1 to 0.

Wednesday’s fixtures will see Colombia face DR Congo in Group K, Switzerland take on Canada in Group B, Bosnia and Herzegovina meet Qatar in the same group, Scotland play Brazil in Group C, while Morocco face Haiti.
