Lieutenant General Chikadibia Isaac Obiakor, retired, a respected Nigerian military officer and globally recognized peace operations expert, has died in Abuja at the age of 75.
Family sources confirmed that he passed away on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, at a hospital in the Federal Capital Territory. His death has drawn tributes from military circles, diplomatic communities and international institutions that worked closely with him over the years.
Obiakor was widely regarded as one of Africa’s most accomplished military leaders in peace operations, with a career that combined field experience, strategic leadership and international service at the highest level.
Born on February 18, 1951, in Zaria, Kaduna State, he originally hails from Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State. He began his military journey at the Nigerian Military School in Zaria before moving on to the Nigerian Defence Academy in 1971 as part of the tenth regular course.
He was commissioned into the Nigerian Army in 1973 and rose steadily through the ranks, earning respect for discipline, professionalism and deep operational knowledge. Over time, he also strengthened his academic foundation, attending the National War College, now known as the National Defence College, and later obtaining a Master’s degree in Strategic Studies from the University of Ibadan.
Throughout his service, Obiakor held several important command and staff positions. He once served as General Officer Commanding the Second Mechanised Division in Ibadan and later became Chief of Army Administration at Army Headquarters. Colleagues often described him as calm, firm and highly skilled in managing complex military operations.
His international profile grew significantly during the West African peace efforts in Liberia. Between 1996 and 1997, he commanded the ECOMOG Artillery Brigade and later served as Chief Coordinator for the country’s 1997 elections, a key moment in Liberia’s return to civilian rule.
In 2006, he was appointed Force Commander of the United Nations Mission in Liberia, a role that further strengthened Nigeria’s reputation in global peace support operations. His leadership during this period was widely acknowledged as instrumental in stabilizing post conflict recovery efforts in the country.
Between 2008 and 2010, Obiakor reached a historic milestone when he became the first African to serve as United Nations Assistant Secretary General and Military Adviser for Peacekeeping Operations at the United Nations headquarters in New York. In this position, he played a central role in shaping international responses to conflicts across different regions.
After retiring from active military service in 2011, he continued to serve the international community. He was repeatedly called upon to lead investigative and advisory missions on conflict situations in countries such as South Sudan, Syria and the Democratic Republic of Congo. His involvement in these assignments reflected the level of trust placed in his judgment and experience.
The Federal Government later honoured him with the Officer of the Order of the Federal Republic for his contributions to national security and global peace efforts. His life story was also captured in a publication titled Rough Road to Peace, launched in Abuja in November 2022 by the National Defence College.
Obiakor’s passing marks the end of a remarkable journey of service that spanned national defence, regional stability efforts and global peace operations. He is remembered as a soldier, strategist and statesman whose influence reached far beyond Nigeria.
He is survived by his family, colleagues and generations of officers who were shaped by his leadership, discipline and commitment to service.
