In a powerful address to the nation’s troops, the Minister of Defence, retired Gen. Christopher Musa, has described the officers and men of the Nigerian Armed Forces as the ultimate shield of the country and the finest representation of its people. Speaking on Wednesday at the Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day (AFCRD) Regimental Dinner and Awards Night in Abuja, the Minister made it clear that while the nation relies on their strength, failure is simply not an option in the ongoing mission to secure the land.

The Minister emphasized that the diversity within the military is one of Nigeria’s greatest assets. He noted that the unity found within the ranks is what keeps the country’s sovereignty intact. Gen Musa praised the courage of soldiers working both at home and on international missions, reminding them that the relative peace enjoyed by many Nigerians is a direct result of their constant vigilance and personal sacrifice.

Beyond the celebration, the Minister touched on the solemn nature of the Remembrance Day events. He described it as a time to honor those who have paid the ultimate price and a moment to stand by the families they left behind, whom he called the “silent pillars” of national sacrifice. He assured the personnel that the administration of President Bola Tinubu remains fully committed to their welfare, promising continued improvements in equipment, logistics, and general support for the military.

The Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, also spoke at the gathering, noting that the regimental dinner is more than just a tradition. He explained that it serves as a vital platform to reinforce the core military values of honor and discipline. For Gen. Oluyede, the event is a reaffirmation of the military’s resolve to protect the nation’s democratic institutions while maintaining the highest ethical standards.

A key theme of the night was the importance of human rights and the rule of law. The military leadership stressed that maintaining public trust is essential for operational success. To lead by example, the evening featured the presentation of command medals of honor to several officers who have shown exceptional bravery and dedication in the line of duty.

This dinner marks one of the final major events of the 2026 remembrance activities. The commemorations are set to conclude this Thursday with the traditional laying of wreaths at various locations across the country, serving as a final salute to the heroes who gave their lives for the peace of the nation.
