Comrade Umar Adamu Sarkinfada, the Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) FRCN Kaduna Chapel, has raised a serious alarm over the declining standards of journalism, calling it a direct threat to the profession’s credibility and the nation’s peace.
In a recent New Year message addressed to media practitioners, Sarkinfada pointed out that the rise of fake news, lazy investigation, and the infiltration of “quacks” into the industry are causing irreparable damage. He warned that when journalists prioritize speed or sensation over facts, they risk losing the hard-earned trust of the public.
The chairman was particularly concerned about how unverified reports on sensitive topics can trigger widespread panic and social unrest. He noted that the reckless actions of a few untrained individuals often overshadow the diligent work of professional journalists who strictly follow the rules of the trade.
Sarkinfada used the opportunity to remind his colleagues that the new year should serve as a reset for the industry. He urged every reporter to return to the basics of the craft—focusing on thorough fact-checking, balance, and investigative depth as outlined in the NUJ code of ethics.
Beyond individual efforts, the NUJ leader called on media houses to take more responsibility by implementing stronger internal controls and providing regular training for their staff. He also had a message for the general public, advising news consumers to be more discerning and to always verify information through reliable platforms before sharing it on social media.
Ending on a note of resolve, Sarkinfada reaffirmed that the FRCN Kaduna Chapel remains dedicated to upholding the highest standards of integrity. He expressed hope that this year would mark a significant shift toward more responsible and ethical journalism across Nigeria.
