Tension filled the air in Ganye, Adamawa State, as Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri faced a hostile reception from a group of youths while on a state tour. The governor, who was addressing supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), was interrupted by chants of disapproval from the crowd, with the youths shouting “Ba a yin, ba mu a yin” in Hausa, signifying their discontent.
Fintiri, undeterred, shot back in the same tone, “Kai ma ba a yin ka. Ba ka yi; dama wa ya ce ka yi?” which translates to, “You too, we are not with you. Who even asked you to be with us?” The governor’s response was met with continued booing, prompting him to ask the disc jockey to play music, briefly shifting the mood to a dance.
The incident highlights the simmering tensions between supporters of the governor and those loyal to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who has since left the PDP for the African Democratic Congress (ADC). Ganye, located in Adamawa South Senatorial District, is part of Atiku’s stronghold, and the governor’s visit was seen as a bid to assert his authority.
Speaking earlier, Fintiri said the state tour aimed to engage residents, assess his administration’s performance, and improve service delivery. “We are committed to delivering dividends of democracy,” he declared, urging the electorate to vote massively for the PDP in the 2026 local government elections.
Fintiri also took a swipe at critics, saying, “Some use social media to abuse us as a government, but I ignore them as a responsible government committed to delivering dividends of democracy to you, my people.” The tour will see the governor commission completed projects, assess council chairmen’s performance, and engage stakeholders through town hall meetings.
