Afrobeats breakout star Folarin Odunlami, popularly known as Fola, has apologized to fans following the sudden halt of his first headline performance at the Mainland Block Party. The show, held on Monday, December 15, at the Balmoral Event Centre, Federal Palace Hotel in Victoria Island, Lagos, was stopped due to safety concerns after the venue reportedly exceeded its approved capacity.
The highly anticipated concert was disrupted when a surge of fans led to overcrowding and rowdiness, raising safety alarms. Several attendees reported difficulty accessing the venue despite purchasing tickets, highlighting organizational challenges during the event.
Fola, who managed a brief performance before the show was cut short, addressed the situation in an apology shared on his X (formerly Twitter) account the following day. “My people, I’m really sorry about how last night went,” he said, acknowledging the disappointment experienced by fans. He added that reports of injuries were particularly troubling and emphasized that safety had to come first. “People were hurt and that should never happen. I had to stop the show because safety comes before anything else,” Fola explained.
The singer assured fans that their concerns had been noted and that corrective steps were underway. “I hear you on all fronts, and we’re working to make things right,” he added, reaffirming his commitment to his audience.
The event, meant to celebrate Fola’s rise as a 2025 Afrobeats breakout artist with hits like Lost and Bye Bye, triggered backlash on social media. Criticism was directed at both the performer and the organisers, with many calling out poor planning and inadequate crowd management.
Dangbana Republik, Fola’s record label, also released a statement on X acknowledging the safety lapses that led to the disruption. The label confirmed that the venue’s capacity had been exceeded, creating unsafe conditions. “The performance was halted as soon as it became clear that fans were at risk. We are working with the organisers to ensure adequate measures are taken to address the concerns of those affected. Your safety remains non-negotiable to us,” the statement said.
At the time of filing this report, the Mainland Block Party organisers had not issued a separate statement regarding the incident.
