Heads Up, Nigeria: NiMet Predicts Three Days of Rain and Thunder

Zoyols Blog

Get ready to pull out those umbrellas! The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has released its latest three-day weather outlook, predicting a stretch of rainy and thundery conditions across the country from Monday through Wednesday.

Monday’s forecast suggests that morning thunderstorms and moderate rainfall are likely over the northern states, specifically impacting Jigawa, Zamfara, Kano, Kaduna, Bauchi, Yobe, and Katsina. As the day progresses, the weather system is expected to bring rain to Kebbi, Adamawa, and Taraba. Residents in Bauchi, Jigawa, Katsina, Kaduna, and Kano need to be particularly vigilant, as the agency warns that flash floods are possible in these areas.

Moving to the nation’s middle belt, areas like Niger, Benue, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Plateau, and Nasarawa can expect cloudy mornings followed by light to moderate rainfall. NiMet notes a high risk of flooding in parts of Plateau State, so residents there should take necessary precautions. Down south, the day will see light to moderate rains in a broad sweep of states including Ondo, Imo, Abia, Enugu, Ebonyi, Anambra, Edo, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom.

The weather pattern shifts slightly on Tuesday. The Northern parts of the country are predicted to see sunnier skies with just patchy clouds, though thunderstorms and rain are expected to persist in parts of Adamawa, Taraba, and surrounding states. Meanwhile, the central and southern regions will continue to experience moderate rainfall.

Looking ahead to Wednesday, the north is expected to start with sunshine and scattered thunderstorms. The central region will likely see cloudy skies and moderate rain. Southern states, including Ebonyi, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, and Cross River, should brace for morning showers followed by a shift to moderate or even heavy rains later in the day.

With the increased risk of severe weather, NiMet is stressing the need for public safety. Anyone living in flood-prone areas should activate their emergency response plans. Residents are strongly advised to avoid driving during heavy downpours, secure all loose outdoor objects, and take necessary measures against strong winds and the potential for low nighttime temperatures. Furthermore, remember to disconnect all electrical appliances during a storm and avoid seeking shelter under tall trees.

For airline operators, the agency highly recommends obtaining airport-specific weather reports to ensure safe flight planning. For the general public, continuous weather updates can be found on NiMet’s official site.
