Governor Siminalayi Fubara has officially broken his silence regarding the recent impeachment move against him, firmly asserting that he remains the substantive leader of Rivers State. Speaking as the special guest of honor at the grand finale of the 2026 Port Harcourt Polo Tournament on Saturday, the governor addressed the political tension while emphasizing his commitment to the state’s welfare.
The remarks come on the heels of a significant development in the state’s political landscape. Just last Thursday, the Rivers State House of Assembly sent a formal request to the State Chief Judge, seeking the formation of a seven-man panel to investigate allegations of gross misconduct against the governor and his deputy. Despite the gravity of the situation, Fubara maintained a calm demeanor, assuring the public that he would not waver in delivering on his administration’s promises to the people.
Fubara reflected on the recurring nature of these political hurdles. He noted with a hint of irony that crises in the state seem to have coincided with the annual polo tournament for three consecutive years. Recalling past challenges, he mentioned that while early 2024 was particularly difficult and 2025 was equally tense, the current year brought its own “love letter” in the form of the impeachment proceedings.
The governor was quick to point out that the successful and peaceful hosting of the week-long tournament, which featured international teams from Argentina and India, is proof that the state remains secure. He told the audience that the absence of any safety incidents during the event validates his administration’s focus on protecting lives and property, which he described as the government’s primary duty.
Beyond politics, Fubara used the platform to pledge further support for sports and local infrastructure. He expressed his intention to upgrade the facilities at the Port Harcourt Polo Club, noting its reputation for having one of the finest natural grass pitches in the country. He encouraged visitors, including the Argentine Ambassador and other foreign dignitaries present, to share the positive side of Port Harcourt with the world to help counter any negative labels.
In his closing remarks, the governor promised to maintain the peace and avoid any actions that could destabilize the state. He reiterated that his administration would continue to work with any group or individual genuinely interested in the progress of Rivers State, regardless of the ongoing political storm.
