Iran Envoy Blames Foreign Powers for Domestic Protests

zoyolsblog

Iran’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Golamreza Mahdavi Raja, has linked recent unrest in Iran to interference by foreign-backed actors, while acknowledging that economic hardship initially sparked public protests. Writing in an OpEd for Zoyols Blog, he noted that dissatisfaction over living conditions is a legitimate reason for peaceful demonstrations.

Raja warned, however, that some protests have been hijacked by “hidden agendas and foreign interference,” escalating beyond their original economic and social demands. He highlighted that Iran’s Constitution upholds freedom of expression and assembly, and emphasized government efforts to ease citizens’ pressures through social welfare programs, economic support measures, and policy reforms.

The envoy accused certain hostile states, particularly the United States and Israel, of exploiting domestic unrest by supporting organised groups aiming to destabilize the country. He described these actions as violations of international law, referencing the UN Charter and General Assembly Resolution 2625 of 1970. According to Raja, coordinated plots inside Iran sought to turn peaceful protests into violent upheaval, but were thwarted by security agencies and citizens working together.

Raja concluded by stressing that Iran’s approach balances protecting citizens’ rights with maintaining public order, framing stability and security as intertwined responsibilities. He reinforced that dialogue and constructive engagement remain central to the nation’s strategy for lasting peace and resilience.
