South African midfielder Jayden Adams has died at the age of 25, bringing sadness to the country’s football community just weeks after representing South Africa at the ongoing World Cup.
The news was confirmed on Saturday by South Africa’s Minister of Sports, Gayton McKenzie, who described Adams’ passing as a painful loss for the nation.
In a statement, McKenzie said he received the news with deep shock and sorrow, adding that South African football had lost one of its most gifted young players. He did not reveal the cause of Adams’ death.
Police have since launched an investigation after the body of a 25 year old man was discovered inside a house in Schotschekloof, a suburb in central Cape Town, on Saturday morning. Authorities said inquiries are ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Adams recently featured for South Africa at the World Cup, making appearances in all three of the team’s group stage matches. However, he did not play in the knockout clash against Canada.
A native of Cape Town, Adams began his professional career with Stellenbosch FC before securing a move to CAF Champions League winners Mamelodi Sundowns in January 2025, where he continued to establish himself as one of the country’s promising midfielders.
His death comes only weeks after he suffered the personal loss of his grandmother, who passed away on the eve of South Africa’s Group A fixture against Czechia at Atlanta Stadium.
At the time, the South African Football Association noted that despite carrying the emotional weight of his grandmother’s death, Adams still started the match against Czechia and gave everything on the pitch for his country.
