Nigerian filmmaker Kunle Afolayan has voiced frustration over the skyrocketing cost of diesel, describing it as a major strain on his businesses.
Speaking on the impact of energy expenses, Afolayan said the current diesel price of around N1,500 per litre has made it increasingly difficult to sustain operations. “I’ve been sad, sad because I can’t cope with the N1,500 per litre of diesel. I can’t even comprehend it,” he lamented.
The director revealed that his creative hub, KAP Village, spends approximately N11 million on diesel every four to five weeks, despite having solar power installed. Diesel remains essential, particularly when solar energy supply is insufficient to meet operational demands. “Even with solar power, we still spend about N11 million in four or five weeks at the Lagos KAP Hub,” he explained.
Afolayan described the situation as unsustainable, sharing that the business often purchases diesel on credit to keep activities running. “Sometimes it even takes two months to pay and then get another one on credit,” he said, highlighting the strain caused by the recent surge in diesel prices from around N1,000 per litre to over N1,500.
The filmmaker called for support to expand his renewable energy infrastructure, emphasizing the urgent need for assistance. “So please, if you can come to our aid, I’ll really appreciate it,” he appealed.
