The National Human Rights Commission has officially launched a comprehensive five-year National Action Plan, a strategic move designed to reinforce the promotion and protection of citizens’ rights across Nigeria. This new roadmap, developed in partnership with VIVA Atlantic Limited, was unveiled during a critical stakeholders’ meeting in Jos. The gathering, organized by the NHRC’s Plateau State office, focused on harmonizing policies and ensuring that human rights standards are better coordinated on a national scale.
During the session, the Plateau State Coordinator of the NHRC, Kiyenpia Mafuyai, explained that the framework was born out of a clear need to bridge existing gaps and address the shifting landscape of human rights challenges in the country. Spanning from 2024 to 2028, the document is the result of nearly ten years of deep consultation involving various government ministries, departments, agencies, civil society organizations, and international partners. It isn’t just a theoretical piece; Mafuyai described it as a practical, actionable guide meant to yield real results for the average Nigerian.
Zoyols News gathered that the action plan covers a broad spectrum of protections. It highlights fundamental civil and political rights, such as the freedom of movement, expression, and the right to life. Beyond these, it also places heavy emphasis on social and economic rights, including better access to quality healthcare and education. Importantly, the framework prioritizes the protection of society’s most vulnerable, specifically targeting the needs of women, children, persons with disabilities, and those displaced from their homes.
Support for the initiative also came from the leadership of the Plateau State civil service. Represented by Samuel Davou, the Head of Civil Service, Sam Gadong, noted that this plan is essential for repositioning public officials. He pointed out that if properly applied, it will help civil servants better understand their roles in upholding human rights as a core part of effective governance. This sentiment was echoed by Taddy Chollom, the NHRC’s Chief Investigation Officer, who called for a stronger alliance between the government and civil society to ensure accountability.
While the unveiling was met with optimism, participants at the event stressed that the true test lies in implementation. Human rights advocate Jacob Pwakim, representing the Youth Initiative Against Violence and Human Rights Abuse, noted that for this plan to succeed where others have struggled, there must be a transparent framework, adequate funding, and a serious commitment to accountability. Other attendees, including John Shailong and Juliana Isaac, also pointed out that public awareness is key, urging the media to take an active role in educating citizens about their rights.
As the meeting concluded, the NHRC reaffirmed its dedication to overseeing every stage of this five-year journey. The Commission expressed strong confidence that with the right resources and steady engagement from all stakeholders, this action plan will mark a turning point in the fight for justice and human dignity across the federation.
