The heavy reliance on foreign markets for diagnostic tools is creating a dangerous vulnerability in Nigeria’s healthcare architecture. According to the Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria, the nation currently sources between 95 and 99 percent of its in-vitro diagnostic products from abroad. This extreme level of import dependence poses a severe threat to the country’s ability to maintain reliable medical services, especially when global supply chains face disruptions or when the nation encounters sudden health emergencies.
During their 61st annual scientific conference held in Lagos, experts gathered to address these gaps, focusing on critical areas such as local manufacturing, digital health regulation, and the integration of artificial intelligence in laboratories. Investigations by Zoyols News reveal that the consensus among professionals is that Nigeria must urgently pivot toward a phased national strategy for domestic production to bolster its internal healthcare security.
Felix Ofungwu, who served as the conference chairman, highlighted that the current reliance on external suppliers leaves Nigeria exposed and unable to guarantee the steady flow of essential commodities. He emphasized that the country cannot afford to remain at the mercy of foreign market fluctuations, urging for increased local capacity and sustained domestic investment, particularly in genomic surveillance to combat infectious diseases and the growing challenge of antimicrobial resistance.
The association has also reached out to the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria and other key regulatory bodies, calling for a more robust framework for point-of-care testing and institutionalized funding for laboratory accreditation. The underlying message remains clear: the precision and reliability of diagnostic results are the bedrock of effective treatment, and any instability in the laboratory system directly compromises public health outcomes across the country.
Furthermore, the rapid rise of artificial intelligence and digital health technologies has introduced new complexities that the current system is struggling to manage. The association noted that the pace of technological innovation is outpacing existing regulations, leaving significant gaps in how tele-laboratory and digital diagnostic services are monitored. Without a unified Digital Health Act to bridge these uncertainties, the sector risks falling behind in safety and standards, prompting an urgent call for legislative action to align Nigeria’s diagnostic infrastructure with the demands of the modern era.
