Former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, has criticized the All Progressives Congress and President Bola Tinubu’s administration, claiming their policies have pushed over 50 million Nigerians into poverty in just two years. According to Obi, 139 million Nigerians now live below the poverty line.
In a post on X, Obi referenced a recent World Bank report released on October 8, 2025, highlighting the sharp rise in poverty from 87 million in 2023, the year Tinubu assumed office. He described the figures as “a heartbreaking reflection of how deeply our nation is failing its citizens,” adding that they should have prompted urgent national action rather than government rebuttals.
Obi argued that the worsening economic situation contradicts the government’s claims of progress through reforms. He said the policies lacked clear direction and a people-focused approach. “The reforms are not working because there is no plan to channel supposed gains into productive areas that benefit the people and drive growth,” he said.
The former governor urged the administration to implement deliberate, people-centered reforms, emphasizing production over consumption, supporting small businesses and farmers, and investing in education and healthcare.
“No nation can truly rise when the majority of its people are trapped in poverty. With the right leadership, we can make Nigeria work for every Nigerian,” Obi concluded.
