A prominent philanthropist and humanitarian, Maryam Onikijipa, has expressed her outrage and condemnation of the rising cases of rape against girl-child and women in the society. Speaking at an event in Abuja, Maryam, founder of the Maryam Onikijipa Belgore Foundation, stressed the importance of protecting young girls and women, describing it as crucial to the growth and development of the society.
According to Maryam, women are the backbone of procreation, and their protection and guidance are necessary for a healthy and thriving society. She commended the 10th Senate for the bill on rape currently being considered, and also applauded efforts to repatriate Nigerian girls and women stranded outside the country, particularly those who have fallen victim to rape.
Maryam emphasized the need for government to establish centers to support rape victims, citing the trauma and pain they often experience. She reaffirmed her foundation’s commitment to speaking out against rape, molestation, and all forms of abuse against girls and women.
The philanthropist also called on parents and government to educate the boy-child on what is right and wrong, saying this is key to winning the battle against rape. “Family is the smallest unit in a nation, so we must make sure we are doing our best as individuals,” she said, urging collective action against the scourge.
