Serious allegations regarding foreign support for Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have resurfaced following a deep-dive investigation into mobile phone tracking data. The findings suggest that Colombian mercenaries fighting alongside the paramilitary group are part of an extensive cross-border network with ties reaching into the United Arab Emirates and various regional transit hubs.
The investigation, as detailed in reports, focused on the digital footprints of over 50 mobile devices used by Colombian fighters in Sudan between April 2025 and January 2026. This data, analyzed by the Conflict Insights Group (CIG), reportedly uncovered a sophisticated logistics chain used to move personnel into RSF-controlled zones, particularly during the intense battle for El-Fasher in western Sudan.
The digital trail reportedly points toward staging areas that include a military training site in Abu Dhabi. While the Emirati government has consistently denied any involvement in backing the RSF, the investigation claims to have identified a “secret war network” that bridges the gap between foreign recruitment and the frontlines in Sudan. Researchers behind the study noted that this marks one of the most direct links identified to date between regional power players and the paramilitary group’s operations.
These revelations align with recent high-level diplomatic actions. In April, the United States Treasury imposed sanctions on five individuals and entities accused of recruiting former Colombian military personnel for the Sudanese conflict. Officials noted that these mercenaries do not just serve in combat roles but also act as technical experts, including drone pilots and artillery instructors. This recruitment is believed to have worsened what is already considered one of the world’s most severe humanitarian disasters.
The involvement of other regional actors has also come under fire. A United Nations panel recently found that a battalion based in southern Libya assisted in moving these Colombian fighters, along with weapons and fuel, across the border to bolster the RSF. This suggests the support system is not a single-country operation but a broad, multi-layered regional logistics network.
The human cost of this internationalized conflict remains devastating. El-Fasher, the capital of North Darfur, fell in October 2025 after a brutal siege. Reports from that period describe a campaign defined by ethnic killings and extreme violence against civilians. The presence of highly trained foreign mercenaries during these operations has raised serious questions about how much of the RSF’s battlefield success is driven by external help rather than local support.
As the war enters its third year, the scale of the crisis is almost beyond comprehension. Current data shows that nearly 34 million people are in desperate need of aid, with 14 million forced from their homes. For many observers, the core issue is no longer just a domestic power struggle. The mounting evidence of foreign financing, mercenary recruitment, and covert supply routes suggests that the war in Sudan has become a globalized tragedy.
The UAE continues to reject these accusations, and their stance remains a key part of the ongoing diplomatic tension. However, with the United Nations, the U.S. Treasury, and independent investigators all pointing toward the same external support channels, the pressure for international accountability is reaching a breaking point. Many analysts now argue that peace will remain out of reach until the foreign networks fueling the violence are finally dismantled.
