Pope Leo XIV Meets with LGBTQ Advocate, Signals Openness

Zoyols Blog
In a significant gesture of warmth and openness, Pope Leo XIV has signaled his intention to continue his predecessor’s outreach to the LGBTQ community. American priest James Martin, a prominent advocate for LGBTQ Catholics, met with the Pope in a private audience at the Vatican and shared his impressions.
The 30-minute meeting was characterized as “very warm and welcoming, friendly and relaxed,” according to Martin. He believes that Pope Leo XIV plans to build on the foundation laid by Pope Francis, who had championed a more inclusive approach towards sexual minorities during his 12-year papacy. Francis’s legacy includes numerous gestures towards LGBTQ Catholics, such as calling for a Church “open to all.”
Martin, a Jesuit priest who has faced criticism from conservative church members for his advocacy, noted that Pope Leo XIV expressed his desire to continue Francis’s legacy, emphasizing synodality – a collaborative approach among Catholic faithful. This approach involves listening to diverse voices, including those of LGBTQ individuals. Although the specific topic of blessings for same-sex couples wasn’t discussed during the meeting, Martin’s encounter with the Pope suggests a continued commitment to openness and dialogue.
The Vatican had officially announced the meeting without providing details. Martin’s discussion with Pope Leo XIV comes ahead of a pilgrimage of LGBTQ Catholics to Rome, scheduled for next Friday and Saturday as part of the Jubilee celebrations. This event is listed on the official Jubilee calendar, underscoring the Church’s efforts to engage with diverse groups.
