Sanwo Olu Courts Global Property Investors at Lagos Housing Fair

The latest Real Estate Marketplace Conference in Lagos drew thousands of participants to Victoria Island and offered another look at how the state hopes to transform itself into a thriving modern city while confronting the pressures that come with expansion. Investors arrived from different parts of the world and spent time reviewing ambitious plans built around infrastructure, innovation and housing that ordinary people can afford.

The gathering was put together by the Lagos Real Estate Regulatory Authority and the Office of the Special Adviser to the Governor on Housing. It gave the state government an opportunity to restate its belief that Lagos has grown into one of the most energetic urban economies anywhere, and that its current task is to sustain that momentum in a way that keeps the city liveable for future generations.

Governor Babajide Sanwo Olu explained that Lagos has already crossed the stage of being a city of possibility. In his view, the growth visible across the state shows a city that is now firmly in a phase of performance. Glass towers and fast rising districts may tell part of that story, yet they have also created new pressures that have to be addressed with clarity.

One of those pressures is housing that people can afford. The governor said the state is determined to give residents a fair chance at dignified homes, particularly with the city’s expanding population. He described housing as a matter that goes beyond buildings. For him, it touches on human dignity, productivity, social balance and the choice a society makes about the future it wants.

Sanwo Olu said Lagos cannot continue to build a modern urban space using outdated planning ideas. Housing, he stressed, now sits at the centre of government priorities and is closely tied to better transportation, strong infrastructure, energy supply, climate readiness and access to opportunity. That explains the long list of public investments underway across roads, rail, water supply and drainage systems. He said homes cannot succeed in isolation, and that they must be linked to jobs, markets and comfortable movement across the city.

He insisted that affordability must mean homes that people can live in, pay for and access without stress. These homes, he added, should not be far from where families earn a living. The state plans to rely on partnerships with the private sector, improved financing models, better land use and planning guided by demand. In his view, government must act as an enabler and partner rather than the only provider.

The governor used the conference as an opportunity to encourage both foreign and local investors. He gave assurances that Lagos will continue to operate with transparency and that every investment will benefit from improved security. He described the state as one of the most secure and stable places for investment on the continent, and said the administration continues to deepen its security network through technology, intelligence, manpower and coordinated operations among agencies.

He praised the organisers for building a meeting point where ideas and capital can connect with policy. The Special Adviser to the Governor on Housing, Barakat Odunuga Bakare, said the conference has become an important space for professionals in the sector. She pointed out that earlier editions contributed to concrete regulatory steps, including a tenancy bill now before the State Assembly that is expected to clarify the rights of landlords and tenants and set better guidelines for real estate transactions.

Former Commissioner for Environment, Muiz Banire, spoke as keynote lecturer and set out ideas he believes can accelerate housing development. He said the vision of government must be strong enough to outlast temporary policies. He called for loyalty to a unified master plan, protection of highway setbacks and stronger environmental laws that can keep the state habitable.

The entire event reflected a shared message. Lagos is eager to grow, eager to attract capital and eager to ensure that development does not leave its residents behind. The expectation is that ideas shared at the gathering will guide the next phase of expansion, shaping a city that works for many rather than a privileged few.
