Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has hailed the ongoing Coastal Highway project as a monumental achievement, describing it as a “game-changer” that is already delivering significant economic relief to the state. Speaking at the 26th annual thanksgiving service held at the Tafawa Balewa Square on Sunday, the Governor expressed deep appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for his vision in initiating the legacy project.
The event, themed “Grateful for Unfailing Mercies,” served as a platform for the Governor to reflect on the progress made over the past year. A critical 30-kilometre stretch of the highway Section I, Phase 1 was temporarily opened to traffic in December 2025. This move proved vital during the Christmas and New Year festivities, providing much-needed relief to commuters navigating the often-congested Lekki-Ajah corridor.
Governor Sanwo-Olu noted that the highway is not just a road but a catalyst for growth that is already impacting local communities and the broader state economy. He credited the President’s dedication to securing the necessary investment financing for making the ambitious project a reality. The Governor emphasized that such flagship infrastructure is central to the state’s mission of building a modern, resilient, and inclusive mega-city.
Reaffirming his administration’s commitment, Sanwo-Olu highlighted the synergy between the state’s THEMES Plus Agenda and the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda. He pointed out that the 2026 budget, tagged the “Budget of Shared Prosperity,” is specifically designed to consolidate these gains, focusing on modern infrastructure, a thriving economy, and social inclusion for all residents.
As the state moves further into 2026, the Governor stressed that sustained collaboration between federal and subnational governments remains the most effective way to ensure the dividends of democracy reach the grassroots. With several other iconic projects like the Ojo General Hospital and the Massey Children’s Hospital slated for completion this year, Sanwo-Olu assured Lagosians that the momentum of development will only continue to accelerate.
