The Sokoto State Executive Council has given its full backing to a significant financial commitment aimed at resurrecting the burnt sections of the Sokoto Central Market. An allocation of N8,499,855,347.12 has been formally approved for the comprehensive reconstruction and rehabilitation project.

This massive undertaking will be executed by 38 separate contractors, all drawn from the local business community within the state. To ensure a rapid start, the contractors will receive a 50% down payment, with the entire project stipulated to be completed within a tight timeframe of just three months.

Governor Ahmed Aliyu commended the council members for their robust cooperation in driving forward government policies and urged them to intensify their collective efforts to secure a brighter future for the state’s residents. He stressed that teamwork and collaboration are indispensable pillars for realizing the administration’s primary goals.

The reconstruction of the Central Market is viewed as a vital economic lifeline. This project is expected to deliver a significant boost to local economic activity, directly improve the livelihoods of countless traders and vendors, and drastically enhance the market’s overall infrastructure, which suffered extensive damage in a devastating fire back in 2021. The current administration has previously undertaken investigations and addressed the circumstances surrounding that incident.

Additional Infrastructure Approvals

Beyond the market, the State Executive Council sanctioned two other important projects. The council approved the construction of an entirely new administrative block and the rehabilitation of existing facilities at the Sokoto State Pilgrims Welfare Agency. This project is valued at N469,140,662.38 and is scheduled for completion within six months.

Furthermore, a key step in the state’s fiscal process was taken with the council’s approval for the submission of the 2026 proposed budget to the Sokoto State House of Assembly for consideration and eventual approval.

Governor Aliyu concluded the meeting by reiterating his appreciation for the dedication and collective efforts of the council members, noting that the progress achieved across various sectors is a direct result of their commitment and teamwork. He pledged that the government would continue to provide all necessary support and resources required for effective governance and sustained development across Sokoto State.
